Understanding Your Educational Options

School choice refers to policies and programs that allow families to select the educational setting that best meets their child’s needs, rather than being limited to the school assigned based on their home address. It focuses on providing families with the ability to make informed decisions about their child’s education.

School choice may include a variety of options such as traditional public schools, charter schools, magnet schools, open enrollment across district lines, private schools, online or virtual programs, homeschooling, and scholarship or voucher programs.

Public schools are available to all students at no cost to families. They employ certified teachers, follow state-approved curricula, and are required to provide special education services and related support under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Other educational options may offer different structures or approaches to learning. However, the availability of services, particularly special education support, can vary by setting. Families considering alternatives should review what services are provided, as some options may have different requirements, support, or associated costs.

The Hope Scholarship is West Virginia’s Education Savings Account (ESA) program. It allows eligible families to use public funds for approved educational expenses, such as tuition, tutoring, therapies, and other educational services.

The goal of school choice is to provide flexibility and access to a range of educational opportunities. There is no single approach that works for every student. Some students may benefit from the services and structure of their local public schools, while others may find that alternative options better meet their individual needs.
